Canal Boat Trips

The canal boat trips provide an opportunity for our supported housing residents and their carers to have a nice day out on the Montgomeryshire canal on The Heulwen Trust’s two specially adapted boats.

Both boats have hydraulic lifts to enable easy access for wheelchair users and are manned by trained crew. ‘Heulwen’ is the Welsh word for Sunshine, so it is a very appropriate name for a Trust dedicated to bringing enjoyment to those with special needs.

The Heulwen Trust tailor trips according to need and recommend a minimum of two hours to experience the beautiful Montgomeryshire countryside as it unfolds as the boats travel slowly along the canal. This provides an opportunity for residents to meet Association staff who they would not necessarily have met previously.

This is the fifth year that Mid-Wales Housing has offered canal trips. In 2015 we were able to book nine boats on six dates to offer dates to suit both our residents and accompanying carers.

The difference it has made

Fifty-eight of our elderly or disabled residents had a very enjoyable trip on the canal together with 40 of their carers. This provided the opportunity to do something different in their everyday lives and to meet other residents and carers in similar situations to themselves whilst at the same time exploring the lovely local countryside and its wildlife.

“It was a brilliant trip and would like to come again”

“The barge was very adaptable for wheelchair users and toilet very good. Staff very helpful and sociable”
